Intelligent Mail Barcode

Are you ready for the Intelligent Mail® barcode?

The USPS® has announced its plans for the rollout of the Intelligent Mail® barcode. The final rules, published in the August 19, 2008 Federal Register, outline new standards that take effect in May 2009.

Important Details
  • In May 2009, mailers will have three barcode options: the Full-Service Intelligent Mail® barcode, the Basic Intelligent Mail® barcode and the current POSTNET™ barcode. When the next price changes are announced, it will include two prices: one for Basic Intelligent Mail® barcode and POSTNET™, and a proposed lower price for Full-Service Intelligent Mail® barcode that is likely to take effect in the fall of 2009.
  • In May 2011, the POSTNET™ barcode will no longer be an option.
  • In addition to lower postal rates, benefits for the Full-Service Intelligent Mail® barcode include: free start-the-clock information to notify mailers when the USPS takes possession of mailings and free address correction updates for mailpieces that do not have the most current address or are undeliverable for other reasons. (Free ACS is unlimited for First-Class® Mail; free for 30-days for Standard Mail® and 60-days on Periodical Mail.)
